This project is about providing a 3D visualization for a wide variety
of custom built products. The visualization takes place on a client
machine based on input provided by the user and on data provided by a
server.
The 3D visualization will be part of our product configuration
wizards that allow customers (other businesses) to specify the
products they want to order. We custom-build these products exactly
the way the customer wants them.
We have a concrete pilot project in mind around aluminum framed doors.
This text contains initial details about the framed doors project,
but starts with more general introduction and requirements sections,
because we currently assume that the principles that apply for the
framed doors project also apply more in general to many of our other
products as well. While we would like to start concretely with the
aluminum framed doors project, we hope that the code written for this
project is general enough to be used for different products.
An example wizard screen is shown below, taken from our online
TANDEMBOX configurator (drawers). This is the screen where the user
provides technical (non-design-related) input:
Right now we select a static image that best matches the user input
among a set of pre-defined images.
We will redesign the wizards and rewrite them in flex, allowing us to
provide a richer user experience and that includes 3D visualization.
This wizard simply needs a 3D composition of 1) pre-drawn components
2) components drawn on the (flex) client, such as a wooden back and a
wooden bottom.
We have a wizard for internal use for our ordering department that
has more options but the overall idea remains the same. ]]>
